Well we have finally managed to clear the diary and cut the cord with home to head down south to 'Holderness'. The journey down was fine with reduced levels of traffic for some reason We arrived about 1330 and by the time we had stowed stuff and filled with water etc It was nearly 1600! Then there was the decision to either stay in the marina until morning, or just go. We just went and were soon off the berth and looking back to our 'hole' before heading off to the entrance to the marina.
Our berth is just the other side of the red one furthest away. Things may have been a bit uncomfortable for some whilst we have been at home as the only elsan on the marina got blocked and took several days to clear it. The nearest other one is at Fradley Junction!
Ee turned right and head down the Trent and Mersey towards Fradley. It was a beautiful afternoon and the dappled shade alongside Ravenshaw Wood was just perfect.
The buildings and chimney are still there from the old Diary that was at Kings Bromley Wharf until the 1930's.
I was quite surprised at how many boats were moving at this time. Only a couple of hire boats having to get from A to B the rest pottering along. Maybe they had sat out the heat of the middle of the day. It was lovely passing the Slaish Woods.
There were banks of rhododendrons with their lovely mauve colour along the canal. Part of the HS2 Plan is to do some work on this wood to enhance the surviving woodland. I think that rhododendron is an invasive species so I wonder if these will be for the chop?
Just before Woodsend Lock there is a good view of the remedial work. This area was designated to receive the soil from the woodland decimated by the driving through of the actual track. As you can see there are some very bare trunks of trees which I assume have been transplanted here, along with much smaller ones. Along with those there are many many whips of trees that have been heeled in, and I must say looked alive from this distance. I'm not sure whether the ancient woodland soil has been spread already and has quickly grown over with grass etc, or now the trees are in the soil will be around them!
( For more information see my blog of 4th June 2021).
A boat had just penned up Woodend Lock so we had to just wait a little while. That cave me just enough time to retrieve the centre ropes from the bow locker as in our haste I had forgotten to do it before leaving the marina.
We didn't go very far below the moorings after Woodend before we found a spot and banged in some pins.. Before I had completed that Helen was out with the chairs, and her book. I even had a beer. It is good to be back on the move with 'Holderness'.
Oh and well done Wales for winning. I wonder what will happen on Friday??
